Report for the March 2012 Parish Council Magazine

It’s early 2012 and we are well on with our preparations for Kippax’s entry into the Britain in Bloom competition. As this is a rare opportunity for Kippax to appear on a National stage we felt that we should take this opportunity to explain how we came to be involved in Britain in Bloom and how Kippax will benefit.

First a reminder about the Kippax in Bloom group (KIB) and their role in the ‘in Bloom’ competition.

KIB has been in existence since 2002 and comprises of a team of unpaid volunteers who express their pride in their community by taking on environmental and horticultural projects. Most noticeably KIB has created and maintains over 40 floral displays in prominent locations throughout the town. The group tries to harness the community spirit by involving residents, other groups, four schools, local businesses and local government in matters affecting our town’s environment. KIB also takes the lead in Kippax’s entry in the In Bloom competitions.

Our main sponsors are the Parish Council without whose generous support many of the tasks could not be accomplished.

As a result of our Gold award in the 2011 competition we were invited by Yorkshire in Bloom to enter Britain in Bloom 2012. It is a great honour to represent of our region and as such we can expect to attract additional financial, practical and technical support from LCC Parks and Countryside and our Parish Council. As an illustration of the benefits for Kippax we need look no further than our 2009 campaign (when we achieved a Silver award in the competition) and benefited from new street furniture, painted lampposts, improved planting/planters and unsightly areas tidied.

Kippax will be entering Britain in Bloom in the Urban Community category and judging will take place towards the end of July by representatives of the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS).

As well as accessing our horticultural achievements the judges will also will be looking closely at how Kippax looks after its environment and the community involvement in the campaign.

In order to present Kippax in a positive light in this national competition it is vital that we show a united front and involve as much of the community as possible. Everyone can help and some suggestions are:-

  1. Display a notice stating your support for the work of KIB.

  2. Water flower beds

  3. Sponsor a hanging basket or flower bed.

  4. Enter the Front Garden competition.

  5. Delivering leaflets.

  6. Digging/ planting/ litter picking.

If you can lend a hand or have any other ideas /suggestions on areas in need of attention then please

contact Pat Samy at Pat’s Sweet Shop on the High Street, telephone 2862283 or e-mail her on psamykib@aol.com
